As part of Building Sustainable Communities, successful schools and safe environments for our children are key components in rejuvenating struggling communities.
Through our child care initiative, we financed the Vailsburg Child Development Center that offers quality, affordable child care and gives young children a healthy, stimulating start in life. We also provided $1 million to expand classroom and recreation space at North Star Academy, which is part of the Uncommon Schools network of charter schools. This will increase enrollment to more than 2,000 students over the next three years.
But kids need opportunities beyond the classroom as well. With support from the NFL Grassroots program, LISC financed two new community fields last year—Nat Turner Park and Andre Tippett field that will serve the community as well as the local high school and little league football teams. Truly “sustainable communities” are built on the success of our children, and LISC is helping to give them the best possible chance to thrive and grow.
