Strategies: Sustainable Communities and Equitable Development

Washington, DC LISC is using its resources in the Parkside-Kenilworth, Southwest, Ivy City, and Congress Heights neighborhoods to accomplish projects and initiatives that address the needs identified by neighborhood residents, helping them to live and thrive in their local communities.

Increasing the Availability of Affordable Housing

DC LISC is supporting efforts in the Ivy City neighborhood that will replace 37 vacant parcels of land and properties with 58 units of affordable, green housing. In Parkside-Kenilworth, DC LISC is providing equity for 98 units of new senior housing, and in Southwest, LISC’s resources are helping to preserve the affordability of a 107-unit, limited equity cooperative.

Increasing Family Income & Wealth

Through its long partnership with the Atlas Performing Arts Center an arts venue that has spurred the revitalization of the H Street NE corridor LISC is supporting the Atlas Stagecraft Program. The nine-month program is providing 16 individuals with hands-on training in highly-demanded stagecraft skills such as lighting, sound, projection and carpentry. The goal is to help these individuals find a living wage and stable employment.

Increasing the Availability of Quality Goods, Services and Jobs

LISC is investing to help restore the long-time vacant historic Howard Theatre in the Ledroit Park neighborhood. Once open, this theatre will bring jobs and entertainment and help spur economic activity in the neighborhood.

Improving Access to Early Childhood Learning and After-School Activities

As a result of our investments, 45 children living in Southeast Washington, DC neighborhoods are participants in the Higher Achievement Program — a rigorous academic after-school and summer program for children in middle school. LISC is also investing in our partner organization, Bright Beginnings Inc., to help 100 homeless infants and toddlers receive a quality early childhood education.

Increasing Opportunities for Healthy Living

LISC is investing in a new health care center in Congress Heights that will provide medical, dental, and mental health care for residents living in neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River.
