Mission
Bay Area Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) works to make neighborhood dreams a reality by working with cities, residents, nonprofit organizations, and key public and private partners to build the capacity of community revitalization efforts. Our transformative community-building work ranges from creating affordable housing and strong neighborhood business districts to leading community-driven neighborhood planning processes to supporting direct services for lower income families. This holistic approach draws upon all of our programs and resources to help neighbors build good places to live, do business, work, play, and raise families.
What We Do
We work in low-income neighborhoods throughout the nine-county Bay Area, offering a suite of programs and resources as diverse and multifaceted as the communities we serve:
- Revitalizing the heart of the neighborhood
The power of LISC's visionary and collaborative strategies has created jobs and leveraged millions of public and private investment dollars to transform neighborhoods throughout the Bay Area.
- Developing Housing Choices
LISC is committed to providing affordable housing choices that celebrate diverse people and cultures, helping maintain the unique fabric of local communities. Along with our affiliate, the National Equity Fund, we have helped create one of the most productive nonprofit housing development sectors in the country.
- Creating vital commercial and community facilities
LISC transforms low-income neighborhoods by developing flourishing commercial and community facilities in partnership with cities and nonprofit development organizations. These include retail stores, childcare and youth centers, office space and health clinics.
- Play space and recreation
The power of LISC's visionary and collaborative strategies has created jobs and leveraged millions of public and private investment dollars to transform neighborhoods throughout the Bay Area.
- Growing green neighborhoods
Our Green Connection program unites the community development field with the environment movement to create and sustain healthy communities for all, particularly for low income individuals and families. We promote sustainable energy, smart growth and green building in community planning and development.

Our AmeriCorps members develop the skills to become effective agents for positive change. This one-year training program provides hands-on experience working with local nonprofits and helps the next generation of community leaders.

How We Do It
Bay Area LISC draws on more than a quarter century of experience at the forefront of community development. As part of the national Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the nation's largest community development intermediary, we have strong partnerships with public, private, and nonprofit organizations in communities throughout the Bay Area and around the nation. We offer a comprehensive set of tools, resources, and expertise including:
- Training: institutes, workshops and conferences
- Technical assistance: one-on-one assistance, peer networks, and online resource
- Capital: program/operations grants and loans for housing, commercial space and community facilities
- Policy and advocacy: policy studies, conferences, and symposia
