The NFL Foundation Grassroots Program provides non-profit, neighborhood-based organizations with financial and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety and accessibility of local football fields. The program is a partnership of the National Football League Foundation, which provides funding, and LISC, which provides technical assistance and manages the program.
In 2015, the Grassroots Grant program awarded a $200,000 grant to the Rochester City School District to build a synthetic turf football field at the Franklin Campus. This funding helped provide a safe playing surface for local youth football teams and increased opportunity for additional football events, school related physical education activities, and other recreational programming.
“The District recognizes the importance of health and sports for children, especially in urban districts, who are historically known for funding cuts in school sports programs," said Bolgen Vargas, Rochester City School District Superintendent. "Synthetic turf field is an efficient and effective way to get children involved in sports and help maintain our good working relationship with youth football organizations in the city of Rochester.”
This year, Buffalo LISC has partnered with Saving Grace Ministries to revitalize the playing field at the East Ferry Sports Complex, located on the city’s East Side.
