As public officials, private investors and planners struggle with questions of metropolitan sprawl, regional competitiveness, and "smart growth", advocates for cities are being charged to help build stronger, more attractive urban cores as the hub of a stable, sustainable region.

Rebuilding distressed urban and rural areas is a critical economic and social issue, not simply a moral one. This work demands creativity. It requires intermediary organizations, like LISC, to serve as a conduit between distressed communities and the know-how to get the job done.
