DETROIT, (August 17, 2010) – The Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) has named Tahirih Ziegler as its new Executive Director, it was announced today by Nick Khouri, Detroit LISC Local Advisory Committee Chair and Vice President and Treasurer of DTE Energy.
In this pivotal leadership position, Ziegler will be responsible for expanding Detroit LISC’s work in building sustainable communities. For 20 years, Detroit LISC has invested in the revitalization of Detroit’s neighborhoods. Over the past five years, its efforts shifted to a more comprehensive approach: Building Sustainable Communities, a community-led, comprehensive approach to neighborhood revitalization that includes expanding investment in housing and real estate; increasing family income and wealth; stimulating economic development; improving access to quality education; and supporting green, healthy environments.
“We are very pleased to welcome Tahirih to the Detroit LISC office,” said Khouri. “Her long-time affiliation with LISC, as well as her leadership skills, vision and prior experience in community development will be invaluable to the Detroit program.”
With some 18 years of community development experience, Ziegler honed her skills by rising through the ranks of the LISC organization, where she held several key leadership and capacity building roles.
Initially serving as a Program Officer for Michigan LISC, Ziegler was subsequently promoted to the role of Executive Director, directing and spearheading LISC’s community development work in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, and Flint; and secondary markets of Lansing, Pontiac, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Ziegler also served as an Assistant Program Officer for Kalamazoo LISC.
Her previous professional experience includes working as a Project Manager with Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services, a Project Director for the Women’s Survival Center of Oakland County, and an Executive Director for the Waterford Cultural Council.
“I am honored and delighted to join Detroit LISC,” said Ziegler. “I look forward to working with our non-profit partners, community leaders and the board as we propel the organization to an entirely new level of building sustainable communities, and create a lasting legacy in the city of Detroit.”
Ziegler also serves as an Advisory Council member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis and as the Board Vice President for the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan.
Ziegler earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Michigan State University in 1991, and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration at Western Michigan University.
