LISC receives $4.2 million for 2nd year from the Social Innovation Fund

LISC's received its second year funding of $4.2 million from the Social Innovation Fund to continue its work creating economic opportunity for residents of low income neighborhoods through Financial Oppotunity Centers (FOC). The effort expands FOCs in Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Duluth, Houston, Indianapolis, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Rhode Island, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. It extends the reach of LISC Financial Opportunity Centers to more than 50 communities and an estimated 15,000 individuals.

The Social Innovation Fund has concluded its second rigorous, highly competitive grant selection process and is pleased to announce that five outstanding intermediaries will be receiving awards.

Like the eleven organizations selected last year, these five represent experienced grantmakers with strong track records of success who have proposed compelling, innovative programs to tackle some of our country's biggest challenges in our most needy areas.

SIF celebrates success story from Chicago LISC's Centers for Working Familes

Teaching Financial Literacy at the Instituto del Progreso Latino On Chicago's southwest side, the three predominantly Latino neighborhoods where Instituto del Progreso Latino works suffer from low incomes, low education levels, and rates of unemployment as high as 15%.

The nonprofit Instituto has provided education, training and employment services to working families in Chicago for over thirty years. But in 2006, its leaders realized that jobs were really only the beginning. To lift families out of poverty in a way that was sustainable and caused systemic change, they would need to do more.

So, Instituto began incorporating innovative services for financial coaching and income support counseling into its programs and transformed themselves from a simple jobs center to something they call a "Financial Opportunity Center" (FOC). Continued[+]...
