New senior apartments in Petersburg celebrate opening

Claiborne Square, the first state-of-the-art senior apartment complex in Petersburg, opens.

PETERSBURG - Claiborne Square, touted as the first state-of-the-art senior apartment complex in Petersburg, will officially open today during a ribbon cutting ceremony off Halifax Street.

"This is really different," said Cynthia Martin, executive director of Restoration of Petersburg Community Development Corp. Claiborne Square was developed in partnership with ROPCDC and the Better Housing Coalition.

Actual construction on the complex was started in early 2010 and completed in July 2011 - but work to actually build the complex goes back more than five years.

In 2007, Virginia Local Initiatives Support Corp. brought together more than 1,000 citizens who gave input to the revitalization plan, and Halifax was one of the four neighborhoods they designated as a priority.

In May 2010, Veronica Jemmott, manager of community partnerships for Virginia LISC said "this is the first concrete project," when announcing Claiborne Square - a $6.6 million investment.

The Rev. Dr. Robert Diggs, founder of ROPCDC and pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church, said at the time that the project would be the first state-of-the-art apartment complex exclusively for seniors.
