LISC-funded project in Boston named "Best Urban Development" finalist by Affordable Housing Finance
Dudley Village, Boston, MADudley Village, a 50-unit affordable housing project developed in Boston by Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation, was named a finalist for the "Best Affordable Housing Developments of 2007-08" award given by Affordable Housing Finance in December. The project represents a major public safety win for the neighborhood, having replaced vacant lots and a notorious bar that were crime magnets prior to Dorchester Bay's intervention with the Boston Police Department. Now 50 low-income families will find homes in five brand new buildings; four small businesses are renting commercial space; and other residents will have access to a variety of youth and job services.
Five units are targeted for homeless residents and former offenders returning to the neighborhood through the Boston Re-entry Initiative. This project is also a signature Transit Oriented Development Project along the Fairmount Commuter Rail line, which will soon add up to 5 new stops. Boston LISC provided $500,000 in pre-development financing to make the project possible, and LISC's Community Safety Initiative provided more than $80,000 in grants and technical assistance to support the community-police partnership. Dorchester Bay EDC and the Boston Police were also recognized for the early successes of this project with a MetLife Foundation Community-Police Partnership Award in 2003.
