Experts Online: Green jobs and deconstruction - Part II

Bookmark and Share

Webcast Event - April 28, 2010; 2:00 - 3:30 PM

Overview

Deconstruction--an environmentally-sustainable alternative to traditional demolition--can improve the safety & physical appearance of neighborhoods by removing blighted properties, and also offer an opportunity for residents to access green jobs training and career paths. LISC is working with local partners in several cities to design deconstruction workforce development and neighborhood revitalization initiatives; however, deconstruction efforts that achieve both of these goals can be challenging to launch, maintain, and scale up.

This two-part webinar will highlight LISC's deconstruction programs, strategies for addressing obstacles, and best practices from the field. (Note: LISC will circulate brief background readings for those participants who would like a basic introduction to deconstruction in advance of the webinar.)

Part II of Green jobs and deconstruction

Participants will:

  1. Learn more about the institutions, systems, and funding streams that can support deconstruction as a workforce and community development strategy.
  2. Hear early lessons learned from Milwaukee LISC's deconstruction pilot--including some of the political, regulatory, and coalition-building challenges and strategies for mitigating these barriers.
  3. Gain a more detailed understanding deconstruction job training, as well as how this training can be implemented through a transitional employment model.
