Quality Schools & Healthy Neighborhoods: The Future of D.C.

Live Event - October 6, 2008; 5:30 - 7:30 PM

A discussion of the findings and recommendations of a new study and policy report on the supply and demand of quality public schools in the District of Columbia and the relationship between public schools and neighborhood attributes. This event marks the end of an 18-month study conducted by the Brookings Institution, the Urban Institute, and the 21st Century School Fund, and sponsored by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education.

The Quality Schools and Healthy Neighborhoods research and policy reports explore how a cohesive strategy to align policy, planning, and budget in education and neighborhood development can help the District of Columbia better serve the families already living here, attract new families with children to the city, and increase public school enrollment.

This event will explore the study's findings on a range of issues around educational quality, enrollment choices, and neighborhood change. It will explore such issues as:

  • Current and historical student enrollment and mobility patterns;
  • Factors that contribute to families' decisions about choosing schools;
