This archived webcast discussion talks about eminent domain — what it is, what is happening, how it impacts our work, and critical issues for the future.
The power of local governments to redevelop blighted areas emerged during 2006 as one of the most contentious policy issues for state legislatures. As over 3/4 of all states introduced measures to restrict eminent domain, local governments advocated for the power to seize land for public redevelopment; private property interests pressed for their ownership rights, and community developers struggled to assess the impact on the revitalization of urban neighborhoods and corridors.
