At their best, mixed-use projects create vital places that use space and public infrastructure efficiently by promoting pedestrian and transit-friendly environments. Often at the center of efforts to revitalize under-utilized property in inner-city commercial districts, mixed-use projects offer the potential to integrate the development of higher-density housing with the creation of new neighborhood-scale retail space. This report highlights model practices, challenges and opportunities based on the experience of mixed-use projects in the Twin Cities. It is intended to be a resource for community developers and policy makers contemplating pursuing mixed-use projects.
