Affordable Housing

A safe, affordable home is one of the basic requisites of life—a critical key to individual health and well-being, and the foundation for sustainable, economically vibrant, and diverse neighborhoods. As the cornerstone of LISC DC’s work, affordable housing has benefits that extend beyond the walls of a home to the neighborhood, city, and region at large. It boosts spending and employment in the surrounding economy, brings revenue to local government, and helps to create a more competitive and equitable regional economy that can generate opportunities for all.

Since 1982, LISC DC has helped to make quality affordable housing available to low-income and vulnerable households—from seniors to veterans to working families to the formerly homeless—the majority of whom are Black or Hispanic DC residents.

LISC support has helped create
15,169 and counting
affordable homes throughout the District.

As the cornerstone of LISC DC’s work, we provide our partners with flexible financing that protects, preserves, and produces affordable rental and homeownership opportunities for low-income and vulnerable households to thrive in a growing city. As a mission-driven lender, we go the extra mile for partners who share our deeply held vision for an inclusive city.

To make this happen, we provide grants, loans, and equity for nearly every aspect of development, from planning and acquisition, to construction and renovation. Financing is provided early and creatively structured to connect credit to opportunity. We also offer technical assistance, data, and mapping tools to our partners, and we advocate for good housing policy at all levels of government.
