Education

Access to education is a hallmark of a sustainable community. It encompasses not only high-achieving public schools but also quality child care, school readiness programs, after-school programs, educational opportunities for adults and leadership training for parents and school leaders. Detroit LISC promotes educational advancement and youth engagement as part of comprehensive community development.

Not only do strong educational opportunities like these attract residents with a lasting commitment to a neighborhood, they are the bedrock of the kind of equitable, diverse and sustainable communities in which everyone deserves to live.

The Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA)

Just in time for the 2012-2013 school year, The Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA), one of the highest performing charter schools in the state, completed construction of its first high school. Located near Eastern Market, the 58,000 square foot Early College of Excellence includes a state-of-the-art gymnasium, media center, administrative office, and classroom space that meets the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Platinum specifications.

The project totaled $11.5 million, with most of the financing coming in the form of equity and loans through the Chase New Markets Tax Credit LISC Charter School Investment Fund, with the loans supported by State Farm.
