Few not-for-profit organizations have the resources to undertake massive,
multimillion-dollar redevelopment projects. LISC is the exception to
the rule because it benefits from both local and national funding, with
the added capacity to leverage these resources through matching funds
and additional CDC funds.
Over the past 17 years, Greater Miami LISC has fostered programs that
have turned around the lives and neighborhoods of thousands of Miami’s
residents. Working through 15 CDCs, Greater Miami LISC’s accomplishments
can be summed up as follows:
- $33 million in total investment derived from local funding and LISC
matching funds.
- $25.6 million invested in revitalization programs to increase affordable
housing, economic development and community facilities.
- $7.6 million in grants
- Over 2,500 housing units developed
- Over 100,000 square feet in commercial space developed
- More than $260 million in overall economic impact.
Greater Miami LISC has three programs under which it does it work: Comprehensive
Community Development in Overtown Program, the Holistic Neighborhood
Revitalization Program, and the Performance-Based Support Program. In
addition, Greater Miami LISC is determined to ensure that the CDCs continue
to meet their goals by providing a capacity building program that help
them meet the needs of the changing community development landscape.
Comprehensive Community Development in Overtown
In the next three years, Greater Miami LISC, the Collins Center and
the Trust for Public Land will oversee a comprehensive community development
initiative in Overtown as a result of a grant from the Knight Foundation.
By forming a collaborative, these three organizations will develop and
implement a program of physical improvement, economic opportunities,
human services and leadership that will serve as a model for comprehensive
community development.
Holistic Neighborhood Revitalization Program
In an effort to foster holistic neighborhood revitalization efforts,
Greater Miami LISC will provide funding, technical assistance and capacity
building support to CDCs that are engaged in holistic neighborhood revitalization
programs. A holistic approach simultaneously addresses housing and physical
development, economic development and social/human development. A CDC
can adopt this approach by implementing multi-faceted, high impact projects
and/or by creating linkages, coalitions or liaisons with other initiatives
in their neighborhood or the broader community.
Performance Based Support Program
Through the Community Support Collaborative, Greater Miami LISC will
work with local government, businesses and philanthropic funders to further
develop a joint Performance Based Support Program for CDCs. The aim of
the Support Collaborative is to serve as a single access point for operating
support, training and technical assistance. The Support Collaborative
seeks to use performance benchmarks and capacity building standards to
identify and address the organizational needs of CDCs. In the next three
years, Greater Miami LISC and the Community Support Collaborative will
continue to refine the performance based support program, focusing on
the nine core competencies outlined in LISC's Capacity Mapping Protocol
(CapMap). |
