Greater Newark Neighborhoods

Program Overview

The Greater Newark-Jersey City LISC office is continuing our 25-year tradition of supporting community development throughout New Jersey by initiating the Greater Newark Neighborhoods (GNN) program. This program is part of the National LISC Building Sustainable Communities initiative, which supports redevelopment efforts that go beyond physical development to comprehensively examine and address the broad and unique needs of the residents within the community. Greater Newark LISC is one of 17 designated local LISC sites implementing Building Sustainable Communities by focusing on the advancement of the following five goals:

  1. Developing, preserving and investing in the physical environment.
  2. Increasing family income and wealth.
  3. Stimulating economic activity, locally and regionally.
  4. Improving access to quality education.
  5. Fostering livable, safe and healthy environments.

Greater Newark-Jersey City LISC has strategically started our comprehensive community development initiative in the Lower Broadway neighborhood.  The GNN Convening Agency La Casa de Don Pedro will be the central coordinating entity to build partnerships with local organizations, residents and civic leaders while organizing projects in Lower Broadway that address the five coordinated goals of Building Sustainable Communities.

To lead Greater Newark Neighborhoods, Greater Newark & Jersecy City LISC has brought Baltimore native Robin Brown on board. Robin graduated from the Bloustein School with a Masters Urban Policy and Economic Development and previously worked for the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency. After joining LISC in May, Robin is swiftly getting GNN off the ground in Newark's first designated neighborhood - the Lower Broadway community.
