KC-CUR Helping to Coordinate Community

Merchant associations and community improvements districts (CIDs) are among the most impactful tools that local neighborhoods can use to organize and promote community-serving economic development.

LISC and the Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI), together with the City of Kansas City, MO and the Mid-America Regional Council, are implementing stakeholder-driven community development visions for the four Priority Areas in the Kansas City Catalytic Urban Redevelopment (KC-CUR) Initiative.

At 31st & Troost, KC-CUR is convening neighborhood leaders, business owners, and developers interested in creating a CID. Although a Midtown/Troost CID petition had already been developed, stakeholders along Troost want to revisit this structure and reconsider boundaries, revenue sources and activities.

With an inclusive governance model and support from local property owners, a Troost CID can enhance the environment, align disparate business interests, and supplement city services to improve cleanliness, promote safety and security, and market the area as a thriving destination.

LISC and UNI have brought stakeholders togetheridentified best practices from the Independence Ave. and Downtown CIDs, and collaborated with developers proposing their own CID. The goal is to move the area toward a coordinated effort to begin collecting the signatures from property owners needed to secure City Council approval and launch this important district management strategy.
