Why do you want to join the LISC AmeriCorps Service Program?
As a recent college graduate with a degree in Spanish Language and Literature, my work and volunteer experiences have been primarily in Spanish-speaking neighborhoods and schools. While serving my community as a volunteer, I learned that the voices that make up a community are the voices of the residents that keep it alive. I am looking forward to receiving professional development trainings and expanding my knowledge in community development. I want to be part of a network that believes in moving neighborhoods forward.
What will the member be doing?
As the Community Organizer, Ximena will be working with neighborhood leaders and organizations within the neighborhoods served by Westside Housing Organization and the HUD Choice neighborhoods. Ximena will help to identify and organize Model Block leaders for the Choice Paseo Gateway area. She will also coordinate community organizing activities with the Westside Housing 8th Street Project Team to enlist community-based organizations for the support of transit oriented and solar development.

Why do you want to join the LISC AmeriCorps Service Program?
Being an adult learner myself, I understand the struggle to excel in school while living daily life. Working for LISC will allow me to get back to other adult learners wanting to do better for their families. I’m passionate about the community, the people in the community, and future of the community.
What will the member be doing in the community?
As the KC Degrees Outreach Coordinator Ibrahim will be establishing a referral system between the LISC Financial Opportunity Centers and KC Degrees adult learners in need of support around comprehensive financial literacy, education about public benefit eligibility and resources. Additionally Ibrahim will assist KC Degrees in outreach for the KC Scholars adult learner scholarship opportunity, and assistance with completing applications
