Open House Event Held in Blue Hills

NeighborhoodsNOW Lead Agency Blue Hills Community Services (BHCS) celebrated the completion of the Olive Street Homes Development Project at a ribbon cutting and open house event on Wednesday, April 2.

The Olive Street homes consist of five newly-constructed single-family homes located between 49th and 50th streets on Olive in the heart of the NeighborhoodsNOW target area of Wabash Village.  This is a significant achievement, as new housing is a priority of the neighborhood’s Quality of Life Plan.

A once vacant and overgrown block, this development breathes new life into the area, offering affordable homes with the benefits and charm of a historic neighborhood. The homes feature three distinct floor plans with designs named after famous Kansas City jazz musicians: the Webster, the McShann, and the Turner. Designs blend the “bungalow” and “farm house” styles which complement the unique character of existing homes in the neighborhood.

All five homes have also been Energy Star® Qualified by an independent professional organization and exceed strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The five homes achieved a Home Energy Rating System score between 61 and 69, which is significantly more energy efficient than a standard home. This means families who purchase these homes will enjoy considerably lower energy bills.

In addition, the Olive Street homes benefit from their advantageous location in the heart of the NeighborhoodsNOW target area of Wabash Village. Interested homebuyers will be encouraged by the focused attention and additional resources which NeighborhoodsNOW offers communities.

Representatives from Greater Kansas City LISC, M&I Bank and Blue Hills Community Services proudly unveiled the recently completed Olive Street Homes at an April 2nd press event.

The Olive Street Homes development is just the beginning, emphasizes Joanne Bussinger, BHCS Executive Director. As part of the NeighborhoodsNOW Quality of Life Plan, it helps achieve the first goal to build additional single-family infill houses in northern Blue Hills. The next phase for Olive Street is to acquire other properties and build more quality housing that complements Olive Street Homes.

“We’re pleased with the success to date,” said Bussinger. “But, this is just the first of many NeighborhoodsNOW accomplishments.”
