Our Mission

Greater Kansas City LISC’s mission is to attract, coordinate and provide resources to assist in transforming targeted neighborhoods into healthy, sustainable communities in partnership with their residents.

We will accomplish this by:

  • Working with neighborhood residents to create and implement Quality of        Life Plans to meet their economic, safety, housing and educational needs.
  • Establishing partnerships, collaborations and strategic alliances to bring financial resources, policies and programs to achieve community improve-   ment objectives.
  • Measuring progress and communicating results so that stakeholders can benchmark and share successful strategies and tactics.

As the local site for LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation), the nation’s largest community development organization, we mobilize corporate, government and philanthropic support to provide local community development organizations with:

Greater Kansas City LISC supports redevelopment in more than 100 square miles of metro area neighborhoods. Since 1981 over $132 million has been invested into 5,869 new and rehabbed houses and apartments; the development of over 1.4 million square feet of retail and commercial space; and the creation of 942,435 square feet of community facilities and sports fields.

Why Community & Economic Development?
Kansas City is witnessing a thriving downtown with a first-class arena, a greatly expanded world-renowned museum of art and a world-class performing arts center. To these we can add a more robust downtown, Crown Center, a revitalized City Market and a newly reconstructed Brush Creek. Yet the long-term success of each project depends on the stability and quality of the adjacent communities. These neighborhoods must be able to attract individuals, families and investors to sustain economic development and provide a solid tax base. In addition, the surrounding areas must offer affordable, attractive and quality housing. Greater Kansas City LISC is the catalyst at the grassroots level.

Simply put, Greater Kansas City LISC is a community economic development engine that transforms once abandoned neighborhoods across the bi-state core into healthy and sustainable communities.

LISC Leverages Local Dollars
Significant financial resources are available for urban core development as LISC matches all local funds with national dollars through loans and grants. This leverage creates unprecedented financial support to local communities.
