In the Winter 2007 Super Bowl edition of the NFL Report, the National Football League (NFL) highlights its 10-year partnership with LISC as a successful program to rebuild playing fields in underserved neighborhoods nationwide.  Since 1999, over $900,000 has been awarded to seven local groups for nine new or refurbished athletic fields in the bi-state Kansas City area.

Greater Kansas City LISC works with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chiefs Children’s Fund to administer the grants. Funds are provided by the NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).

“The Kansas City Chiefs believe that youth athletics are essential to the healthy growth and development of children.” Chiefs President Carl Peterson said. “Youth sports provide future athletes and leaders that enrich both this city and country.”

Communities and schools that have benefited from this partnership are:

LISC and the NFL, through The Grassroots Program have provided financial and technical assistance to a variety of nonprofit neighborhood-based organizations and middle and high schools in approximately 40 cities across the country. LISC ensures that the capital improvements to renovate older fields and establish new ones have a stream of maintenance funds and the community support needed to sustain long-term use.
