3.05.2019

Larry Reed is the Community Development Officer at Citizens Business Bank, where he is responsible for the development and management of a comprehensive community development program that promotes the Bank’s community reinvestment act (CRA) compliance including identifying CRA qualified lending, investment, and community engagement opportunities.

1. Why were you interested in joining the LAC of LISC LA?

I was interested in joining the LAC because I knew LISC was focused on having an impact in underserved communities, and I wanted to share my banking knowledge and experience to support the LISC mission. I grew up in the communities served by LISC LA, and I wanted my volunteer service to impact my community.

2. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job (community development in the banking industry) is bridging the gap between the banking industry and the communities that need access to resources. I also enjoy providing insight to the banking and financing industries regarding the needs of LMI communities, and developing strategies to provide sustainable products, services and programs that improve the conditions of underserved communities and the people that live there.

3. How did you first get involved in the affordable housing/economic development sector?

I became aware of the affordable housing and economic development sectors during my career as a bank regulator. I became a contributor while managing a counseling and education department at a nonprofit HUD certified counseling agency during the housing crisis.

4. What motivates you to work hard?

A few things motivate me to work hard. First, it was how I was raised. My mom was a tough and hard-working single woman raising two sons in South Central LA, and she would not settle for anything less from me. Second, as a father and mentor, young people are watching me, so I feel it is my responsibility to model the way “value-add” people should work. And finally, I understand that every CRA data point I review as part of my work represents an LMI person or community that deserves the best I can provide in my professional life. I also remember when I was a member of that data set!

5. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?

I would choose to spend a day accepting a Grammy Award for a vocal performance or for a piece of music I’ve written! My creative energy provides a change of pace from my work life, and a Grammy would indicate that I had made an impact in the music business!

6.  Who is your hero?

Hero is a powerful title. My mom and my wife come to mind. They both impact/impacted my life in profound ways and are major contributors to who I am today. They both put up with me in ways only true love could inspire.

7. What are you most looking forward to in 2019?

In 2019, I am looking forward to being a value add partner in all of my relationships. I am also looking forward to making strides in my work/life balance!
