Neighborhood Intermediary Communities

Neighborhood Intermediary Communities:

  • Little Tokyo
  • Hollywood
  • San Fernando Valley

Little Tokyo - Little Tokyo Service Center:

The mission of the Little Tokyo Service Center, a Community Development Corporation, is to meet the critical needs of people and build community.

For over 29 years, the Little Tokyo Service Center, a Community Development Corporation (LTSC CDC), has been an important resource for the residents of a diverse community. Founded in 1979, LTSC CDC is a nonprofit charitable organization serving Asian and Pacific Islanders throughout Los Angeles County who are in need, especially those facing language or cultural gaps, financial need, or physical disabilities.

Currently, LTSC CDC sponsors over a dozen different community and social service programs, with over 100 paid staff persons and hundreds of volunteers to provide competent and compassionate services in at least seven different languages as well as Spanish and English. Services include individual and family counseling, support groups, transportation and translation services, an emergency caregiver program, student help lines, crisis hotlines, and consumer education.

LTSC CDC is also the sponsor of several major community development projects in the Los Angeles area. They have completed over 300 apartments, over 100,000 square feet of community space (such as childcare centers), and have developed over $100 million in community-serving nonprofit real estate projects

Hollywood - Hollywood Community Studio:

 The Hollywood Community Studio (HCS) is a community-based research project that studies the physical and social changes taking place in Hollywood.  HCS helps coordinate investments in place and investments in people by linking local residents and small businesses with the opportunities that arise from redevelopment (like access to new jobs and housing).  The Hollywood Community Studio is fortunate to partner with four stellar organizations: The Hollywood Community Housing Corporation, Thai Community Development Center, LA Voice and The Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Community Studio empowers the people of Hollywood to transform their lives and their community.  The mission is accomplished by:

  • Linking residents, small businesses and community organizations with local opportunities and services that will help them meet their goals;
  • Facilitating the creation of a shared vision for the future of their community;
  • Encouraging active and effective participation in public life;
  • Promoting equitable and sustainable development;
  • Measuring the change redevelopment brings to their community; and
  • Sharing the results of their research with the community and beyond.

San Fernando Valley - Youth Policy Institute:  Youth Policy Institute

The Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood led by the Youth Policy Institute is one of only 21 collaboratives across the country to receive a planning grant from the U.S. Department of Education in September 2010. Targeting two high-need neighborhoods in Pacoima and Hollywood, the Promise Neighborhood is leveraging YPI experience providing saturation services in a place- based for youth and families through initiatives that include the San Fernando Valley Poverty Initiative, the Hollywood FamilySource Center, and the Full-Service Community Schools program. Modeled after the Harlem's Children's Zone, Promise Neighborhoods is a centerpiece of the White House Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative.
