PROGRAMS

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health and the environment.  AmeriCorps members serve through non-profits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations.  They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters.  In exchange for a year or two of service, AmeriCorps members earn a modest living allowance as well as an educational award to help pay for student loans, graduate school, or vocational training.

In 1994, National LISC partnered with the Corporation for National Service to sponsor an AmeriCorps program as an additional strategy to help community development corporations (CDCs) help themselves.  Since its inception, the Michigan LISC program has placed 181 members with CDCs in Michigan, and in conjunction with National LISC, has invested over $2.2 million in the AmeriCorps program.  Michigan LISC regards the AmeriCorps program as a key component to its successful activities across the state.  In addition to assisting CDCs in strengthening capacity, it has contributed to personal growth and commitment to community development by the number of members who have found permanent employment with local non-profits after completing their placements.  Equally important, the AmeriCorps program is a stronger example of the additional value added benefit that National LISC brings to local markets.
