MAIN STREET INITIATIVES

Edison Main St. / Kalamazoo

In 2001, the Kalamazoo LISC office forged a partnership with Downtown Tomorrow, Inc. (DTI) to revitalize the Portage Street/Washington Square corridor into downtown Kalamazoo; this partnership resulted in the very successful launching of the Edison Main Street program.

Edison Main Street's first project was the creation of a non-profit incubator, the Edison Center, which is located in the former Green Building on Portage Street.  The 13,000 square foot building is owned by DTI and has been rehabilitated to include commercial space on the first floor and seven residential units on the second and third floors.

The Green Building is in the "heart" of the Edison Main Street project area and is the catalyst to achieving neighborhood community development objectives in the Edison neighborhood.  The Edison Neighborhood Association, the Edison Business Association, the Edison Neighborhood Liaison Public Safety Officers, Weed and Seed, the Edison Neighborhood Assistant Prosecuting Attorney and the Hispanic American Council share the Edison Center.
