LISC Milwaukee hires Marjorie Rucker to help revitalize commercial corridors in the Central City

Milwaukee, April 5, 2012

LISC Milwaukee announces the hire of Marjorie Rucker as their new Commercial Revitalization Specialist. Rucker came to LISC Milwaukee from The King Drive Main Street Business Improvement District (BID) where she served as the Acting Executive Director and Main Street Manager. Since 2005, Rucker’s leadership, together with colleagues and dedicated volunteers, resulted in over $105 million in investments, 25 new businesses, and 1300 employees within the Historic King Drive BID. Rucker also oversaw numerous special events that drew thousands of visitors to Historic Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.

“Marjorie brings hands-on experience and a great passion for Milwaukee’s central city. We are eager for her to apply her talents to commercial corridors in other neighborhoods where LISC works,” says Leo Ries, Executive Director, LISC Milwaukee.

Marjorie is a Milwaukee native and a proud graduate of Milwaukee Public Schools. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Mount Mary College and a Juris Doctorate from Vermont Law School. Read Press Release
 


Six Innovative Groups Announced Winners of the 
13th Annual Milwaukee Awards for Neighborhood Development Innovation

Winners of the 13th Annual Milwaukee Awards for Neighborhood Development Innovation, or MANDI Awards, were announced at a gala event at the Pfister Hotel, Wednesday night, March 28th.  The MANDI Awards are hosted by LISC Milwaukee with sponsorship from US Bank. 700 guests including corporate leaders, neighborhood development groups, and government officials attended the sold-out event honoring extraordinary efforts to revitalize Milwaukee’s central city neighborhoods. The Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago names Leo Ries Vice Chair of their Board of Directors’ Affordable Housing Committee

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago is a $73 billion wholesale bank serving the needs of member housing finance institutions located in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Executive Director of LISC Milwaukee since 1999, Ries has served on the Federal Home Loan Bank's Board of DIrectors for two years. During 2011, the Bank's affordable housing grant programs consisted of both the $21 million Competitive AHP grant program and a $13 million homeownership grant set-aside program called Downpayment Plus® (DPP®). Since 1990, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago has awarded more than $264 million in Competitive AHP grants and more than $77 million in DPP funds that have helped provide housing for families whose incomes are 80% or less of the area median income.

Neighborhood leaders, funders, real estate developers, lenders, and city officials gathered on October 28, 2011, for Milwaukee’s first Community Development Symposium aimed at taking a broader look at central city revitalization in Milwaukee. The symposium was organized by LISC Milwaukee, the local branch of the largest community development group in the country, and hosted by the Marquette University Law School. According to Leo Ries, Executive Director of LISC Milwaukee, this unique gathering is an opportunity to kick-start a more inclusive and much larger game plan for community development in Milwaukee.
