Construction Trades Instructor

BACKGROUND:
The Construction Trades
Academy (CTA) is a comprehensive work-based job training program dedicated to
training community residents in the construction trades through the cooperative
effort of General Contractors, community development corporations (CDC’s),
public and private funders, and community stakeholders. Participants are recruited and screened,
attend orientation and enter a six-month training program. Students commit to
attend classes where they will receive instruction in construction and basic
academics (GED preparation, ESL training), job readiness skills (workplace
social skills, time management, effective communication), career guidance,
computer skills and basic financial literacy.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Instructor works under the supervision of the Director of Human
Capital Development. Responsibilities will include:
- Teaching classes of student trainees at HCCI designated worksites. Class size will range from 25-35 students.
- Instruct students on the basics in a variety of construction trades, including: use of tools, measuring, reading of drawings, blue prints, cost estimating and construction contracting.
- Assist with the instruction of students in the set-up and workings of a career in the construction trades. Act as a resource and mentor throughout the program to acquaint students with the industry and motivate them throughout the learning process.
- Monitor student activities closely and ensure that participants arrive on time, are adequately prepared to work, and complete assigned tasks.
- Respond to student needs and evaluate progress.
- Liaise with CTA Instructor and Human Capital Director to ensure students are receiving comprehensive training.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience teaching in a vocational high school or trade school preferred;
- Five to seven years working in construction trade in a supervisory role;
- Two to five years experience in job training or management in an urban environment;
- Desire to work with community-based organizations and empower community residents to gain skills that will enable them to earn a living wage;
- Enthusiasm and the ability to motivate and support students towards successful completion of the program;
- Knowledge of the New York City construction industry and codes is desirable;
- Ability to follow a curriculum and monitor achievement of milestones through written and practical tests.
- Bilingual a plus.
- College degree.
SALARY:
$40,000 Negotiable, depending upon experience and
qualifications.
