West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood Community Funding Opportunity

The West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood (WPPN), Drexel University and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) have provided a resident-led Community Funding Opportunity for projects that support children living or attending school in the neighborhoods of Belmont, Mantua, Mill Creek, Powelton Village, West Powelton, Saunders Park and East Parkside.

With $30,000 in allocated funds, the Community Funding Opportunity provided money and project planning support to help launch projects that improve students’ safety, health, academic proficiency and opportunities for college & career preparation. Funded projects support safety, health, reading outside of school and college/career preparation including:

  • Participate in 60 minutes of physical activity daily
  • Eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily
  • Feel safe at school and while traveling to and from school; greening projects on routes to schools are eligible
  • Read books outside of school (for children in K‐ 8th grade)
  • Talk about the importance of college and career and plan for achievement of educational and career goals (for parents and family members with children in 9th through 12th grade).

Residents and community members met in January and Feburary to review applications and decide funding allocations. Eight community-based organizations were awarded grants between $2,500-$5,000. Organizations receiving funding include: Holly Street Neighbors CDC/Community Leaders Collaborative, Mantua Civic Association, Second Antioch Baptist  Church, Mighty Writers, West Belmont Civic Association, Healthy Food For Alain Locke Mobile School Store, PC Radio Live and Shardae Wescott.

Projects supported by this opportunity will held throughout 2020 with a goal of completion by Dec. 2020.
