SAN DIEGO – As part of LISC San Diego’s local economic development mission, the nonprofit funding agency provides annual financial resources to locally-based nonprofits through its LISC AmeriCorps program that prepares specially selected volunteers for careers devoted to public service.

For the 2018-19 program year, LISC San Diego recently provided $511,068 to 14 locally-based nonprofits, led by donations to the International Rescue Committee ($86,643), the Regional Task Force on the Homeless ($86,643), and the San Diego Community Housing Corporation ($28,881).

“We’re proud to contribute funding to these dedicated organizations that do so much for the communities and people they serve,” said Ricardo Flores, executive director of LISC San Diego. “What’s more, the young men and women of AmeriCorps benefit immensely from their paid internships that often result in careers devoted to social service.”

Specifically, the funds are used to train students in the best practices of providing career direction and life skills in such areas as financial counseling, employment skills training, job placement and referral, community assessment, housing counseling, housing physical development, and community engagement.

Last week, Congressman Scott Peters (D-San Diego) attended AmeriCorps’ Year 23 graduation to help congratulate the upcoming host sites. In total, LISC San Diego will support 22 AmeriCorps members for the upcoming year.
