Technical Assistance and Training

San Diego LISC works to develop the technical skills of local nonprofit organizations through training and capacity building programs.  These efforts help to ensure that CDCs throughout San Diego County remain robust, relevant and effective institutions.  We provide a number of different training options, from one-day workshops to our year-long intensive HDTI program.

Housing Development Training Institute (HDTI)

Developing talent, building communities.

San Diego LISC joins with the other California LISC offices to sponsor the Statewide Affordable Housing and Community Development Training Institutes (HDTI).  Since 1994 the LISC California statewide program has been conducted every other year with an average of 35 participants in each class.

Participants in the HDTI program are selected through a competitive RFP process.  The deadline to submit a proposal for the 2008 HDTI program has passed.  Please check back for more information on next year's schedule.

LISC launched HDTI in response to an unmet need for a comprehensive program to develop the real estate development skills of community based organizations.  The skills required to develop affordable housing and economic development projects are complex and multifaceted, and the pool of professionals with extensive development experience in this field is limited.  HDTI represents a significant investment in the development of human capital by increasing the skills of new and new-to-development staff members.

The goals of the HDTI are to:

  • Increase the development capacity of community-based nonprofit development organizations by providing practical, comprehensive, and intensive skill training in affordable housing development and community development strategies and techniques.
  • Increase the supply of affordable housing through the program's emphasis on production as part of the learning process.  During the duration of the training program, each participant is expected to work on an actual housing development, applying the lessons learned during the workshop and creating a real-life context for the training.
  • Foster a network of project management professionals who serve as a resource to each other, share information and provide peer support throughout their careers.
