Shaw Neighborhood Initiatives
These projects were sponsored by Manna Community Development Corporation and supported with LISC grant funding.

  • Shaw Neighborhood Improvement Council: Created in 1996. Worked diligently for the redevelopment at Kennedy Playground, Shaw’s only playground for children and started Slumbusters which works with local officials, law enforcement and developers to restore or demolish abandoned properties in the neighborhood where drug activity and other crimes take place.
  • Shaw Listening Project: Uses a tool referred to as the Listening Project, a Quaker community organizing methodology to solicit concerns and opinions from residents. The Shaw Listening Project enables the community organizers to efficiently and effectively engage with community residents.
  • Shaw Eco-Village: Collaborative project between Ecocity Builders and Manna CDC which began as an intensive summer educational program to expose youth to the area of urban design and planning students plan and implement their own design projects.
  • Enterprise Staffing Service: Established in 1998. Focuses on transitioning people from welfare to work using a strategy of placing unemployed residents in companies on a temporary-to-permanent basis. Manna CDC incubated this business for the first three years and ESS now operates as an independent, profit-generating business.

Recycle-A-Bicycle Program/Chain Reaction
The Recycle-A-Bicycle Program was born out of the Shaw EcoVillage Summer Internship Program of 1998. Teens participating in the program learn bicycle maintenance/repair, and skills to run a retail business. Following the successful completion of the workshops, the students become apprentice mechanics and can exchange labor for a bicycle and other cycling equipment. Donated bicycles are refurbished and sold to the community at a low cost or given to those who can't afford them. Chain Reaction located 1416 North Capitol Street NW is the program’s retail store. Supported by LISC grant funding in the amount of $20,000. (Manna Community Development Corporation)
