As a charter school leader, there are so many responsibilities and priorities to balance. Not only do you have to develop an academic plan, communicate your vision to students and their families, and effectively lead a team of educators, you also need to secure and finance a quality school facility. Whether you are at the beginning of your school facility journey or at the point where expansion is the right option, it is important to understand the impact of facility costs on your school budget. Effectively evaluating your existing financial resources and annual operating budget will help you avoid overpaying for a facility (taking money out of your classrooms) or having to use substandard buildings because of a miscalculation of facility-related costs.

If you are planning for an expansion or a permanent facility, please join us on May 7th to learn about the key factors in planning financially for your facility project. Our speakers will run through a cost estimation and affordability exercise for a sample charter school facility project. Schools will also be introduced to LISC’s “SchoolBuild Project Cost Calculator”, a tool that you’ll be able to use for your own facility project calculation.

Attendees will end the session with the ability to:

  • Identify the key variables that affect the cost and affordability of facility projects
  • Understand how enrollment numbers and projected demand should inform decisions to expand or renovate a charter school facility
  • Learn how to estimate the cost and affordability of future charter school facility projects

Presenters

  • Yvonne Nolan, Director of Charter School Financing, Local Initiatives Support Corporation
  • Anand Kesavan, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, CIF
  • Sybil St. Hilaire, Senior Program Officer, Local Initiatives Support Corporation
