The Cashin Community Development Fellowship was established in 2007 through a generous donation from LISC's former Director of Underwriting and current Board member Lisa Cashin and her husband Dick. Cashin Fellows are students and alumni of Prep for Prep, a New York based program that places gifted minority students in some of the nation's most prestigious and academically rigorous independent schools. Now in its twelfth year, the Fellowship is designed to prepare and equip future generations of community development leaders.
Each year, students are selected for paid summer fellowships at LISC NYC's community development corporation (CDC) partners and at LISC. In 2019, two Cashin Fellows worked at LISC and ten worked at CDCs throughout New York City. The program offered these fellows an orientation training with an introduction to community development, a match with a mentor, a mid-summer workshop, a guided neighborhood tour hosted by one of the host organizations, New Settlement Apartments, and a closing program with presentations by all fellows to further their professional development and interest in the field.
The following are some highlights of the neighborhood tour that New Settlement Apartments, located in the Mt. Eden neighborhood of the Bronx, hosted for the Cashin Fellows in summer 2019.
