We kicked off 2018 with our annual Big Apple Innovation Awards, bringing together nearly 400 community development professionals to celebrate the outstanding leadership, innovation, and dedication of individuals who share our vision for an inclusive New York City. On January 30, 2018, we honored Hope Community, Inc. with the Opportunity Builder Award for Housing (see video) and Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation with the Opportunity Builder Award for Economic Development (see video).

In February 2018, we hosted officials from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), including Regional Administrator Lynne Patton, on a tour of community development in the South Bronx. During the tour, HUD officials engaged with local community development corporations Settlement Housing Fund, New Settlement Apartments and WHEDco about their work, and heard about the important impact of federal programs, including the HUD Section 4 capacity building program, in helping to spur economic revitalization and affordable housing opportunities in local communities throughout New York City.

In May we partnered with Rebuilding Together  NYC and Deutsche Bank on our fourth annual LISC Day of Service. Together, staff from Deutsche Bank and LISC rehabilitated one of Riseboro Community Partnership’s Youth Center community gardens.

In July, we held our annual Cashin Fellows Neighborhood Tour, this year hosted by community partner IMPACCT Brooklyn, to enable our Cashin Fellows to view community development and affordable housing first hand. Through our partnership with Prep for Prep, our Cashin Fellowship Program enables college or high school students to gain exposure to community development either by working at local nonprofits such as IMPACCT Brooklyn, or at LISC. The tour provided the opportunity for fellows to engage with community leaders and reflect on their summer experience. A big thank you to LISC Board member Lisa Cashin for her support of the program!
