State of the Sector Survey Shows Need for Nonprofit Capacity Building

It comes as no surprise to leaders in the community development industry that nonprofits are continually asked to do more, for more people, and with fewer resources. The Nonprofit Finance Fund’s newest State of the Sector Survey shows that issues with capacity-building resonate across the nonprofit sector. The 2018 survey collects responses from more than 3,400 nonprofit leaders across the country and serves as a useful snapshot of the sector at this moment in time.

Of the nonprofits responding, 86% reported that demand for their services continues to rise. A majority of organizations were unable to meet the demand for their services in 2017 and did not anticipate being able to do so in 2018. Nonprofits planned to upgrade their capacity in multiple ways as an attempt to meet the needs of the populations they serve through the following means: increasing staff, expanding program offerings and partnering with other organizations.

It is clear from the survey that nonprofits are a critical piece of the fabric of American society. Respondents represent social service, arts and culture, health, housing, social justice, employment and many more important sectors. They are dedicated, creative and resourceful. But it is equally clear that they are challenged by the current political and funding environment, and need expanded support and resources in order to fulfill their missions and meet critical needs.
