What Does Black History Month Mean to San Antonio?

As I celebrate Black History Month this and every month, I recognize the importance of Black history and the value of Black lives. Let's take a moment to reflect on the progress and innovations made by African Americans throughout history. While we celebrate these accomplishments, we also acknowledge that there is still work to be done.

As we move forward, let's be motivated to leave our own mark on this great nation and inspire others to trailblaze. Black History Month serves as a reminder that we can achieve greatness and that the only obstacle standing in our way is the limitation of our thoughts and ideas. Let's continue to celebrate Black excellence daily and work towards a brighter future for all.

While Black history remains vital every day, we appreciate our incredible partners for taking this time to reflect with us and share what Black History Month means to them.

"Black History Month is a time to pause, reflect, and celebrate....it is also a time for all of us to honor that legacy by extending our reach beyond our ancestors' grasp."
— James A. Nortey, II

Black History Month is an acknowledgment of the African American experience in the shaping of American History. An opportunity for open dialogue on topics that include slavery, civil rights, affirmative action, and the systemic inequities that exist in our communities today. It allows us to reflect on where we came from and how we continue to work for change.

Black History Month also gives me an excuse to incorporate the t-shirts I have acquired that celebrate the impact of African American inventors, authors, educators, and social justice advocates, into my every day attire.

As a Black woman, Black History Month holds profound significance to me. It’s a time to honor the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black pioneers throughout history who have often been overlooked or marginalized. It’s a moment to celebrate our heritage, culture, and accomplishments, while also acknowledging the unique challenges and experiences we face. It’s an opportunity to uplift each other, inspire future generations, and continue the efforts toward equity and representation.

Black History is world history, and that history is made every day. Yes, Black History Month is a time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the ordinary and extraordinary achievements of Black individuals who made a difference in our collective society. And it is also a time for all of us to honor that legacy by extending our reach beyond our ancestors' grasp.

Black History Month is a time to recognize the impact that Black leaders, innovators, advocates, and cultural curators have made in this world to better the lives of not only the Black community but also the community at large. It is also a reminder to me to not just acknowledge and praise notable Black individuals for just this month, but to remember and celebrate them always and forever… Cheers to “Black History Life."
