Saluting the Next Generation of Affordable Housing Leaders

LISC LA’s Housing Development Training Institute (HDTI) celebrated the culmination of the 2023-2024 cohort. Forty-five students from cities and rural communities throughout California completed a rigorous year of comprehensive skill building to prepare them to lead in affordable housing development.

Facilitated by the expert training team from California Housing Partnership, students received intensive training and practiced problem-solving through hands-on work simulations. The affordable housing industry is complex and HDTI aims to simplify it.  From initial feasibility, negotiations, and construction closings, to building and operating a property, students gained an in-depth understanding of the affordable housing development process, from beginning to end.

The graduation ceremony brought together students, alumni, trainers, supporters, and LISC staff, who together ensure HDTI continues to be a transformative experience. Sheena Marie Rodriguez, HDTI Graduate and Project Manager for Linc Housing, shared her reflections on the experience during her remarks at the Los Angeles graduation ceremony:

“I remember our very first day together during orientation, the one thing a majority of us wanted to learn was financial modeling. Fast forward to our simulation in Pomona, watching everyone in-person crunching numbers, thinking outside of the box, getting creative with solutions and tactics to secure the best concessions. However, today isn’t just about reminiscing. It is also about looking ahead to the exciting future that awaits us. So, with that said, the social committee wanted to gift our graduating class a small token to mark this accomplishment and give you something to carry with you on this journey – a challenge coin. For those of you unfamiliar with challenge coins, they have a rich military history and are often bestowed to signify membership or commemorate special achievements. This one, designed by our very own Frank Hanna-Bernabe and laser-cut by yours truly, bears our class challenge: “Be the Catalyst for Change.” As someone from a military family, this feels particularly meaningful to me. And I hope each of you carries it with pride, passion, and a commitment to making a difference with open eyes and open hearts.” - Sheena Rodriguez, Project Manager at Linc Housing, HDTI 2023-2024 Graduate

The California LISC Housing Development Training Institute (HDTI), a cornerstone since 1988, has trained over 550 individuals representing over 100 nonprofit organizations. The program aims to increase the development capacity of nonprofit organizations, increase the supply of affordable housing in the state, and foster a network of professionals in the field. HDTI is made possible thanks to the generous support of Merritt Community Capital Corporation.
