Women’s Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day commemorates the signing of the 19th amendment, women’s right to vote. It was not until 45 years later, in 1965, per the Voting Rights Act, did women of color actually receive the right to vote.

Fifty-seven years later in 2022, there is still so much more progress that needs to be made on behalf of women of color. Affordable housing, financial stability, and economic development are just a few of those inequalities LISC KC tries to address on behalf of women of color every day.

Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, LISC KC is using Women’s Equality Day to raise awareness of the issues women of color face today, from gender pay gap to health care. Our guest this month is Michele Watley, founder of Shirley’s Kitchen Cabinet. Shirley’s Kitchen Cabinet is an advocacy group for women of color in the areas of economic prosperity, health and vitality, education, and eradication of violence.

The Community Wise Podcast is a conversation between LISC Greater Kansas City Development Officer Holly Long &  practitioners & thought leaders from the Kansas City Metro region in the fields of community development, social enterprise & social justice.
