Transforming Workplaces for Good

First-generation. Queer. Black. Woman. Mother. Monique Cadle is proud of her intersecting identities. They are the impetus for her work to bridge gaps and dismantle systemic inequities that have long caused pain and suffering, particularly for Black and Brown communities.

For the past 15 years, Monique has been a driving force behind the transformation of individuals and organizations through diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Her belief that authenticity, respect, and understanding are the cornerstone of success guides her work in creating safe and inclusive spaces.

Monique founded Good Works Consulting in 2019 to help organizations through coaching, organizational strategy, and human capital consulting. She envisions a world where leaders drive systemic change to enhance organizational outcomes and individuals' quality of life. And she is making that happen.

DEI in the workplace became a pressing and timely issue following the global response to the tragic murder of George Floyd in 2020. The subsequent protests drew attention to issues of racial injustice and systemic racism, highlighting the urgent need to address DEI in all aspects of society. This period further fueled Monique in her work. She urged organizations and individuals to approach DEI work with the same care and urgency as they would treat their children.

While there was an uptick in investments in DEI work, nearly four years later, Monique notes a waning commitment. In response, Good Works launched a talk series called “Reigniting the Flame,” which focuses on re-engaging people in this critical work.

Monique was looking for an accelerator that could sharpen her skills as a business owner when she came upon Ascend LA. Developed by the University of Washington Foster School of Business and led by LISC LA, Ascend LA mentors and trains diverse entrepreneurs in the construction and professional services industries. Monique joined the 12-week management education program that focused on marketing and sales, growth strategy, contract acquisition, and more to accelerate business growth.

With the training and confidence she gained through Ascend LA, Monique secured a contract with the City of Minneapolis to develop, design, and implement a leadership development program. Good Works’ “Metamorphosis Leadership Development program” will equip senior leaders with the knowledge and skills to create an anti-racist workplace culture fostering racial repair.

Monique reflected on the impact of Ascend LA: “The program provided a solid foundation and network to increase our chances of being successful. We gained access to learning how to bid for opportunities in the public sector, and prepared and submitted proposals for several RFPs. We were fortunate to be selected for one of them and that opportunity led to another project with the same public agency.”

Her experience with Ascend LA has paved the way for additional milestones. She was the only woman awarded a $10,000 grant from Social Change Fund United (SCFU). In partnership with LISC, SCFU provided grants to Black-owned businesses in six cities to help spark economic growth and put a spotlight on the challenges that Black entrepreneurs face when seeking capital for expansion.

As we honor Black History Month and continue to confront systemic injustices, we draw inspiration from Monique’s story and reaffirm our commitment to building a society where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
