Big Wave Group Housing Project

About the project

Big Wave Group was founded in 2000 and is led by a dedicated group of volunteers who live in the community and have family members with developmental disabilities. The original intention of founding the organization was to build housing and a supportive community for their family members. While working towards the housing project, Big Wave Group has operated an organic farm that hosts day programs for adults with developmental disabilities.

Big Wave Group serves adults with developmental disabilities in San Mateo County.

LISC provided $3.53 million of construction financing to Big Wave Group to support the development of 35 units of affordable housing for adults with developmental disabilities. Twenty-eight units will be reserved for members of Big Wave Community Co-op and seven units will be available to adults in the community at no more than 30% of AMI. The project also includes five commercial tenants including a mission-driven restaurant, a nonprofit and three offices. There is an intention to use some of the commercial space to support social enterprises that will provide employment opportunities to residents.
