La Mama Experimental Theatre

About the project

Since its founding in 1961, La MaMa has been functioning as a staple to the New York theatre scene by providing underrepresented artists with an environment of uncensored and complete creative freedom. La Mama hosts approximately 80 productions at low or no cost annually, and has sponsored more than than 4,000 shows with 150,000 artists from 70 nations since 1961.

La MaMa is headquartered in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, NY.

LISC provided $9.51 million in financing ($3.00 million bridge, $3.00 million line of credit, and $3.51 million construction loans) for the renovation of La MaMa's landmark off-Broadway theater, located on East 4th St. in Manhattan. Built in 1873, the building is emblematic of the cultural richness of East Village's history and has become a pillar of New York's theater community. The renovation of the building will not only include aesthetic improvements to the facade, but will also make the building ADA compliant and install upgraded mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to create a safe, energy-efficient environment.
