Ready, Willing and Able: Applying the Stages of Change to Working with Individuals at the Center of Community Violence

Overview

The Stages of Change help us understand how behavior change happens in incremental shifts over time. People change when they are ready, willing, and able. Most programs are developed for individuals ready to attend activities such as GED classes, workforce training, peer mentoring groups. However, individuals that are on the path towards, or have experienced violence as a victim/perpetrator often are not ready, willing, and/or able upon early contacts with CVI programs/staff for a multitude of different reasons. This session explores how CVI partners and multi-disciplinary teams can use the stages of change to design interventions that considers each individual’s ever-shifting readiness, willingness, and ability to engage in healing and change.
