What We Do

LISC is a national organization with a local focus, rooted in the belief that neighborhood leaders and organizations best understand the assets and needs of their communities.

How LISC Works

In order to create a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable District of Columbia, we support our communities in several ways.

  • We provide financial and human capital to build the capacity of our partners and improve neighborhoods.
  • We use our resources to invest in affordable housing and neighborhood assets to improve social, economic, and physical health.
  • We listen to local leaders and neighbors to plan, set goals and measure progress.
  • We amplify the voices of disenfranchised communities and advocate with them for policy solutions and resources.

Our strategy is rooted in the belief that neighborhood leaders and organizations best understand the assets and needs of their communities. Together, we cultivate a range of projects and initiatives to address poverty, disinvestment, and the structural and historic impacts of racism to build a more resilient community of opportunity.

In 2022, LISC invested $58 million in neighborhoods and communities throughout the DC region and Prince George's County, Maryland. Since 1982, we have invested $557 million, leveraging over $3.3 billion. With LISC DC's support, our partners have built or preserved over 15,169 affordable homes and 3.7 million square feet of retail, community, and educational space across the Washington, D.C. Region.
