Community-Based Real Estate Development Training

LISC NY believes that residents know what is best for their neighborhoods. As such, LISC NY supports small-scale minority developers by providing tools that can help them navigate how to best use their resources to make neighborhood visions a reality.

The Community-Based Real Estate Development Training (CBREDT) Program was developed as a collaboration of the University at Buffalo's Real Estate Development Program, University at Buffalo Regional Institute (UBRI), LISC NY, and Empire State Development (ESD).

The intent of the program is to ensure that land and buildings on the East Side corridors are improved, in a manner driven by community, and less likely to fall under the hands of absentee landlords or sit as blight in the urban landscape. The goal is to build a community of citizen developers who are equipped to take an active role in revitalizing their neighborhoods.

The program provides an overview of the commercial real estate development process, including pre-development, construction management, property management, and financing. Students are also matched up one on one with mentors. Mentors are selected based on the students' needs and phases of development.

LISC NY's Role in CBREDT

LISC NY co-designs and facilitates the program, serving as Program Administrator. We also provide direct technical assistance to the students and graduates. LISC NY recruits and manages the scheduling of experts in the field that serve as instructors and mentors.
