Elevating Women of Color in Child Care

LISC’s Elevating Women of Color in Child Care program drives change in the industry by enabling women of color who own and operate child care businesses to grow their business acumen, increase revenue, and upgrade facilities. Our approach affords women of color opportunities to successfully participate in the workforce, knowing their children are being cared for in safe, quality settings aligned with their values and needs.

Approximately 90% of child care businesses in the United States are owned by women, more than half of whom identify as people of color. While we are confronting a national child care shortage, these women entrepreneurs are unable to expand their businesses to meet this essential need. They face an industry-wide challenge of inequitable access to capital and the support needed to grow. The lack of quality child care options also means that parents who need this service, primarily working mothers, are unable to meaningfully advance in their careers.

LISC’s National Child Care and Early Learning Team developed the Elevating Women of Color in Child Care program to address longstanding gender and racial inequities by supporting child care providers owned by women of color. We aim to build a more resilient child care infrastructure in disinvested communities, where families and workers most need access to care.
