Our Initiatives

Under Armour Facility Improvement Program

The Under Armour/LISC Facility Improvement Program is a partnership of Under Armour and LISC to provide select Baltimore City Schools with financing and technical assistance to meet unmet facility needs such as sports facility refurbishments (weight rooms, dance studios, etc.), sports field/court upgrades (refinishing a court, painting a gym, etc.), or school activity facilities upgrades (band practice room, STEM lab refurbishment, etc.).

School facilities serve as tremendous assets. They offer opportunities for exercise and education that are essential for helping foster engaged and active students.

Program Goals

The goals of the Facility Improvement Program are to provide elementary, middle, and high schools operating in Baltimore City with financial and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of sports and recreation facilities. The Program provides grants of up to $25,000 for capital improvement projects to school sports and recreation facilities.

Technical assistance will also be provided by Baltimore-based non-profit, Fund for Educational Excellence, a collaborating entity with Under Armour working to provide assistance to Baltimore City Varsity Interscholastic Athletic programs. "The Fund" is an organization that works to secure the resources necessary to support innovation and increase student achievement in City Schools.

How the Sports & Recreation Space Initiative Works

Under Armour and LISC will issue a Request for Proposals (RFP), or an open invitation to select Baltimore City Schools to submit proposals for funding. The Fund for Educational Excellence, a Baltimore-based nonprofit, will provide technical assistance around proposal development for interested and eligible schools. LISC will review proposals, request additional information where necessary, and makes site visits to finalist schools. Then LISC will recommend to Under Armour which schools have the capacity, plans, and partners to make these proposed improvements. Under Armour Foundation staff will make final funding decisions.

Once awards are finalized, LISC will work with Under Armour and award recipients to make press announcements and handle media events. LISC will then manage the flow of funding, making sure that projects move forward on a timely schedule. The proposal and review processes are designed to make sure that the capital improvement projects will have a stream of maintenance funds and the support needed to sustain the use of the facilities or investments over the long term.
