Last year, LISC launched its newest subsidiary, the SBA-guaranteed lender immito, to scale our ability to reach and support underserved small businesses and help spur job growth across the country. Julie Huston, immito’s founding president, is a seasoned small business expert—in fact, she recently testified before Congress re: new budget proposals that would hamper small business entrepreneurs’ access to credit. We caught up with Huston at her base in Denver to learn more about immito, the economic and social power of small business, and why all this is so close to Huston’s heart.

A Night To Remember

On the evening of April 23rd, 700 partners, colleagues and allies gathered to officially mark LISC's 40th anniversary at a gala celebration in New York City. Special guests and speakers included New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, former Vice President Walter Mondale, former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros, and former Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell. And of course, our 20-year board chair, former US Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin, the evening's distinguished honoree.

Crusading for the Rights of Street Vendors: Q&A with Rudy Espinoza

2018 was a banner year for Rudy Espinoza, the executive director of Leadership for Urban Renewal Network (LURN) in Los Angeles, a nonprofit that specializes in supporting equitable local economies. Not only was he named a 2019 Rubinger Fellow, but last November, the Los Angeles City Council finally voted to legalize street vending, a campaign that Espinoza, LURN and a coalition of vendor-leaders and community developers had been waging for nearly a decade.
